What to Expect

We want to make it as comfortable as possible for you to come and enjoy our fellowship so here is a “how to” guide for Sundays at First Church.

Welcome:  As a visitor you are welcome to worship among us, participate in any of our activities and attend any of our study groups. To learn more about membership, you are invited to attend our Taste and See Brunch.

Parking:  First Church has three lots; one on the north side of the building (half of which are handicapped) and two across Barclay Street. We also have permission to park in the Masonic Temple parking ramp on Sunday mornings. There is also limited street parking and other smaller, business lots in the vicinity.

Entering the Church:  There are two main entrances to the church. The front entrance into the sanctuary narthex is directly off of Fulton St, just west of the Masonic Temple parking ramp. The North Lobby entrance is off Barclay St and adjacent to the church parking lot. Upon entering the lobby the receptionist is available to direct you to worship or church school.

As a Visitor:  You will not be asked to stand up or to wear a red ribbon, but you may be greeted and welcomed by any number of our church family. A Friendship Pad is passed during the service and we ask that you sign in. You will receive additional information from our church, a note during the week or possibly a phone call welcoming you back.

Diversity:  People come to our church from the far corners of Kent County. Some people walk to church and others drive past many other churches to come here because they want to be a part of a unique experience. We are diverse financially. We believe and work hard at “Embracing All People” as stated in our Mission Statement. Every person is a child of God and we accept them as they are. We are diverse in theology. John Wesley believed that “In essentials unity, in non-essentials freedom, in all things charity.” That is what we strive for at First Church.

Sunday Worship:  There are greeters at every door as you enter on Sunday mornings who can help you find your way. There is a receptionist at the north lobby door that can also answer any questions you might have. Upon entering the sanctuary you will be greeted and handed a bulletin that will give you all the information you will need to participate in the worship service. It will also include our weekly announcements and a sign-up sheet for events being held. You may also request the following from a greeter: large print hymnal, braille hymnal, hearing aid, hearing loop, wheelchair, pew cushion.

Dress:  We have no dress code! Suits or jeans, wear whatever you feel comfortable in as you worship God.

Children:  We love children and consider them a vital part of our church family. Click here to learn more about our children's ministry.  There are children’s pages at each entrance that will help your child with the service. We have rocking chairs in the Narthex if you need one during the worship service.

Opportunities to Serve:  Every week we have a “One Stop Sign-Up Sheet” in our worship bulletin. You can use this to sign-up for an event, a service project, a class, or a ministry. We also provide an online list. Visit the Sign Up Sheet page to see what opportunities are available.

Holy Communion:  We practice open communion. You do not need to be a member of First Church to participate. Communion is served on the first Sunday of the month at both worship services and at the Taizé Service on the first Wednesday of each month.

Where do I park?  First Church has three lots; one on the north side of the building (half of which are handicapped) and two across Barclay Street. We also have permission to park in the Masonic Temple parking deck on Sunday mornings. There is also limited street parking and other smaller, business lots in the vicinity.

Will there be greeters or others on hand to help newcomers know what to do?  There are greeters at every door as you enter on Sunday mornings that can help you find your way. There is a receptionist at the North door that can also answer any questions you might have.

Is your order of worship easy to follow?  Yes. Upon entering the sanctuary you will be greeted and handed a bulletin that will give you all the information you will need to participate in the worship service. It will also include our weekly announcements and a sign-up sheet for events being held.

Will I be recognized during the service as a visitor?  You will not be asked to stand up or to wear a red ribbon, but you may be greeted and welcomed by any number of our church family. A Friendship Pad is passed during the service and we asked that you sign in. As a result of that, you might receive additional information from our church, a note during the week or possibly a phone call welcoming you back.

Do I have to join your church?  No, you do not have to join, you are always welcome to worship among us, participate in any of our activities and attend any of our study groups. We provide regular “Taste and See Brunches” by which you may learn more about First Church, and we encourage you to come and learn even if you have no intention of joining. Topics that are covered are faith, Methodist theology, our organizational structure and a tour of our facility. Membership is a choice and commitment which we want you to make only when the time is right for you. You can become a member by Baptism and Profession of Faith, or by Transfer from another United Methodist Church or another denomination. We believe that the Holy Spirit works within other churches and if you have previously been baptized we do not “re-baptize” you.
